On September 15th, 2020, the website of the City Hall of Chihuahua Mexico (chihuahuacapital.mpiochih.gob.mx) was compromised by the hacker known as Al Catraz, who is affiliated with the hacker group PhantomSec1337. The attack specifically targeted the URL https://chihuahuacapital.mpiochih.gob.mx/admin/img/, indicating a breach involving the administrative image directory of the city hall’s website.
The attacker used a brute force attack as the proof of concept for this incident. A brute force attack involves systematically trying all possible combinations to guess login credentials or encryption keys, eventually gaining unauthorized access to a system. This method was employed to compromise the website’s administrative areas.
The reason provided by the hacker for this attack was simply “Heh…just for fun!” This suggests that the primary motivation behind the breach was personal amusement rather than any specific gain or agenda, reflecting a common trend where attacks are carried out for entertainment or challenge.
